Social Learning Program

Lessons in social learning are woven into every part of the day at Frostig School West.

Students and staff begin and end their day with a community circle where everyone can share their thoughts, feelings, and opinions in a safe, non-judgmental space. Students learn to converse, empathize, build community, and celebrate differences.

A cornerstone of social learning at Frostig is Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support, a research-based program that calls on teachers and aides to actively promote and reward positive behaviors, such as being respectful and kind to classmates, taking responsibility, and asking adults for help. Our teachers model and encourage positive social behavior throughout the day. The result is a school environment where students feel safe, involved, and successful.

Frostig School West students also are encouraged to develop a set of social-emotional characteristics known at Frostig as the Success Attributes. Research has shown that the Success Attributes–goal setting, perseverance, emotional coping strategies, self-awareness, support networks, and pro-activity–are necessary to live a rewarding and productive life.

Frostig School West also organizes activities that give students opportunities to develop their social skills. These include lunch clubs and joint events with Frostig School Pasadena. Each year Frostig students organize a Fall Festival and a Friendship Dance where everyone is welcome.
